Boehringer Ingelheim is committed to health; whether the patient is a person or a planet.
Our scientists will tell you, therapies must work in harmony with the body’s natural systems. Seeing ourselves as part of the ecosystems in which we operate is an important step in identifying ways to minimize our impact on the air, water and land.
To care for our environment, everyone must have the information and awareness to act responsibly: Hazardous Waste Day provides a means for household chemicals to be disposed of properly; recycling programs enacted from the deskside to the entire manufacturing process reduce waste and set an example for employees to apply at home.
As the world’s environmental consciousness has been raised, Boehringer Ingelheim has also increased its commitment to being part of the solution. Our large-scale initiatives are complemented with the simple yet powerful changes each employee is encouraged to make. Here are just a few examples:
Harnessing Grass-Roots Environmental Commitment
We have a number of employee resource teams have been formed to take Boehringer Ingelheim’s environmental commitment to the next level by continuously evaluating and improving our current environmental responsibility initiatives (energy, recycling, etc.). Our volunteer run Employee Energy & Resource Conservation teams work together to identify solutions to eliminate energy and resource wasting activities and processes on our Ridgefield site.
Connecticut Clean Energy Fund Award
The Ridgefield site received an award from the Connecticut Clean Energy Fund for its contribution to the State’s campaign to provide 20% of its energy from renewable resources by 2010. The facility purchased part of its electricity from a coalition of resources offering wind, solar and landfill gas instead of fossil fuels. We believe that paying a surcharge to invest in clean, more environmentally friendly sources of energy is good for the company and our community. The Town of Ridgefield received two solar panels from the Connecticut Clean Energy Fund to power town offices as a result of our efforts.
Environmental Stewardship
Ben Venue Laboratories, in Bedford, Ohio won the 2008 Governors Award for Achievement in Outstanding Environmental Stewardship. The award recognizes companies with innovative approaches or programs to minimize waste and use of resources. We were recognized for our recycling programs, precious metals recovery, water recovery and the submission of an application for Leadership in Energy Efficiency and Environmental Design certification for our new lab and office building.
